Mauritius travel guide

Mauritius

Choose the coast. Then leave room to enjoy it.

THE LOOP TAKE

PICK THE COAST, NOT JUST THE HOTEL.

The east has long beaches and a more open feel. It can be breezier in the trade-wind months. The west is usually more sheltered and makes sense for sunset, Le Morne and Black River Gorges. The north has more restaurants and activity around Grand Baie. The south-east suits couples who want a quieter base near Blue Bay and Mahébourg.

WAYS TO DO MAURITIUS

START WITH THE KIND OF WEEK YOU WANT.

Mauritius can be a beach stay, a two-coast trip or a base for Le Morne, Chamarel and Port Louis. We decide this before choosing a hotel, because the island is bigger than it looks on a map.

01

One excellent base

Stay long enough to know your hotel and stretch of coast. Add a handful of purposeful days out, rather than building the holiday around the road.

7 to 10 nights

02

South-west with substance

Use Le Morne or Bel Ombre for mountain scale, inland landscape and a place that gives a first visit real identity.

Landscape first

03

Two coasts, two speeds

For a longer stay, let one hotel change earn its place. Begin on the east, then finish with the south-west’s larger landscape.

04

Beyond the resort

Give one day to Port Louis, a food stop and the historical context that turns an island stay into something more grounded.

Culture and food

05

Mauritius, then Rodrigues

A second island for couples who want a smaller-scale finish. It works only with enough time and a sensible domestic-flight buffer.

CHOOSE YOUR COAST

THE COAST DECIDES YOUR DAY.

Choose the east for wide beaches. Choose the west for calmer water in the right season and easier access to the south-west. Choose the north if you want restaurants beyond the hotel. Choose the south-east if a quieter shoreline matters most.

01

Le Morne & the south-west

For mountain-and-lagoon scenery, inland landscape days and a calmer, more removed feel. Le Morne’s history matters as much as its outline.

Landscape and meaning

02

The east coast

For an open, beach-led opening chapter. We match the exact property to your month because exposure can matter here.

Belle Mare and beyond

03

North & Grand Baie

For a livelier base, water time and easier access to Port Louis. It suits couples who want more going on outside the hotel gates.

More movement nearby

04

South-east & Blue Bay

For clear lagoon water, a calmer south-east base and a natural side trip to Mahébourg, conservation and maritime history.

A SHAPE TO BEGIN WITH

TWO COASTS. ONE WELL-EARNED MOVE.

This 12-night illustrative route begins with slower east-coast days, then moves once to the south-west for Le Morne, Black River Gorges and a more dramatic final chapter. It is not a package. It is a useful way to picture the contrast a second base can create.

WHEN TO GO

ASK WHICH COAST WORKS FOR YOUR DATES.

Wind, rain and water conditions vary around the island. We use the travel month to choose the coast and check current conditions before fixing a boat, beach or wildlife day.

A good time for

November to April

Warmer and more humid. Build flexibility into beach and water plans, especially during the wider south-west Indian Ocean cyclone season.

A good time for

June to September

Relatively cooler and drier overall. The coast you choose can matter more when trade winds are in the picture.

A good time for

May & October

Transition months that can work well for a mixed beach-and-island stay. Day-to-day conditions still change.

A good time for

The right planning question

Not “when is Mauritius perfect?” Ask which coast and hotel make sense for the dates you have.

THE DESTINATION, FELT

WHAT CHANGES AROUND THE ISLAND.

The east has longer beaches and more wind exposure. The west makes more sense for Le Morne, Chamarel and Black River Gorges. The north gives you more restaurant choice around Grand Baie. The south-east is quieter and works well with Blue Bay and Mahébourg.

PRACTICAL PLANNING

PLAN DAYS OUT FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ISLAND.

Port Louis, Chamarel, Black River Gorges and Le Morne are not equally easy from every resort. We place these days around the base rather than turning the holiday into long drives.

Arrival

International arrivals use Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. The onward plan depends on the coast and your first hotel.

Transfers

We use a private driver selectively for the days that benefit from it. Exact journey times depend on your route, traffic and hotel location.

A one-base default

A good hotel on the right coast often gives you more holiday than a string of quick check-ins.

Water days

Lagoon time, snorkelling and boat plans depend on conditions and the right local operator at the time of travel.

GOOD TO KNOW

PLAN DAYS OUT FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ISLAND.

Port Louis, Chamarel, Black River Gorges and Le Morne are not equally easy from every resort. We place these days around the base rather than turning the holiday into long drives.

Entry requirements

Rules depend on your passport, itinerary and individual circumstances. Check the latest official advice before you travel and before you book.

Arrival form

Mauritius currently operates an official online arrival form. Complete it in line with the latest government instructions for your journey.

Le Morne

UNESCO recognises Le Morne for its association with maroonage and resistance to slavery. Build the context into any visit.

Île aux Aigrettes

A conservation-led south-east option. Visits and species sightings are subject to current access, conditions and local arrangements.

MAKE IT PART OF SOMETHING LARGER

KEEP STARTING WITH THE KIND OF TRIP YOU WANT.

Use these travel styles to narrow the conversation. They are a way to choose the route, not another list of places to fit in.

01

Rodrigues

A smaller-scale island for a slower second chapter. We only add it when the domestic arrangements and the time available give it room to feel different.

02

South Africa

A fuller contrast of city, vineyards or safari before Indian Ocean downtime.

03

Réunion

A more volcanic, active island contrast for repeat Indian Ocean travellers. We check routing carefully before proposing it.
