New Zealand travel guide

New Zealand

Make the distance count.

The Loop Take

CHOOSE ONE ISLAND PROPERLY.

New Zealand is larger and slower to travel around than it looks on a map. If you have around 10 to 14 nights, choose the North Island or the South Island. Trying to cover both usually creates too many long driving days.

Choose your route

START WITH WHAT YOU WANT THE DAYS TO LOOK LIKE.

A good route has fewer bases and clear reasons for each one.

01

South Island

Choose this for mountain roads, lakes, Fiordland and a road trip where each base has time to breathe.

02

North Island

Choose this for Māori culture, geothermal landscapes, cities and wine country.

03

Both islands

Only add both when you have enough nights to use domestic flights and avoid a rushed loop.

Where to stay

USE BASES, NOT OVERNIGHTS.

Queenstown and Wānaka work differently. Queenstown has more activity and restaurant choice. Wānaka is quieter and suits a slower lake-and-mountain stay. Te Anau is a practical base for Fiordland rather than a place to squeeze into a day trip.

01

Queenstown

For a lively first or final base, with the lake and mountains close by.

02

Wānaka

For a calmer pace and a longer stay around the lake and trails.

03

Te Anau and Fiordland

For Fiordland access, with plans adjusted around weather and road conditions.

Good to know

PLAN AROUND ROADS AND WEATHER.

Mountain weather, road conditions and track status can change the plan. We build driving days around real roads rather than straight-line map distances. Entry, biosecurity rules, Great Walk access and any road closure are checked for the actual dates.

Driving

Distances can look short but mountain roads are slower than they appear.

Walking

Great Walks and tracks have seasonal opening, booking and condition checks.

Arrival

NZeTA, visitor levy and biosecurity requirements must be checked before travel.

A shape to begin with

SOUTH ISLAND, WITHOUT THE LAP.

An illustrative 11-night route through Queenstown, Wānaka, Te Anau and Fiordland. It uses a one-way direction where possible and avoids turning the trip into a race around the island.

NORTH, SOUTH OR TIME FOR BOTH?

Tell us your dates, whether you want a driving trip or domestic flights, and what you want more of: walking, wine, culture, mountains or coast. We will build the route around the time you actually have.
