Vietnam travel guide

Vietnam

Choose a line through the country, not a checklist.

The Loop Take

PICK A LINE THROUGH VIETNAM.

Vietnam is long. A good first route is not about ticking off every place between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Choose a north-to-south direction, use domestic flights for the big gaps and give the main stops enough nights to feel different from each other.

Choose the route

FOUR STOPS ARE ENOUGH FOR A FIRST LONGER TRIP.

Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City make a strong 15-night route. Add Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay if it is a priority, or Ninh Binh for rural karst landscapes. Do not add both unless the trip is longer.

Where to stay

MAKE THE MIDDLE OF THE TRIP EASIER.

Hanoi is the northern city chapter. Hue slows the route with imperial history. Hoi An can combine a walkable town and the coast in one stay. Ho Chi Minh City is a lively southern finish rather than a place to rush through before the flight home.

Good to know

USE FLIGHTS FOR THE LONG GAPS.

Entry rules, e-visa requirements, domestic transport, regional weather and bay conditions should be checked for the dates. Central Vietnam’s storm and flooding risk is seasonal, so we do not promise a beach or boat day.

A shape to begin with

NORTH TO SOUTH, WITHOUT THE RUSH.

An illustrative 15-night route through Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. It has a clear direction and avoids using every night on a transfer.
